FAQ

  • What are wheat straw plastics?

Wheat is a type of grain that’s most often used to make bread, flour or wheat-gluten. Wheat straw is what’s leftover once the wheat is harvested and using it in plastic production is an ideal zero-waste option.

Plant-based plastics, also known as bioplastics, are creative new materials that have qualities and benefits similar to traditional plastics.

In contrast to traditional plastic, which is generated from petroleum, bioplastic is made from a plant source. Wheat straw, bamboo fiber, rice husks, sugar cane, corn starch, and other plant-based polymers are all examples of plant based sustainable alternatives.

Wheat straw plastics are created by breaking down the cellulose the wheat straw contains. Breaking down the cellulose creates the opportunity to make different kinds of polymers. Substance is created by the building blocks formed by the polymers. Natural polymers are also found in our bodies, like our nails and hair. Where plastic is made from artificial polymers, polymers created from wheat straw are fully natural.

  • Are wheat straw plastics gluten-free?

Since the wheat straw does not naturally contain gluten, wheat straw is gluten-free so can be used by those following a gluten-free diet.

  • Are wheat straw plates safe?

Extremely safe and healthy for kids and adults because all our wheat straw plates are non-toxic and 100% BPA-free. No melamine, PVC or heavy metals. Our eco-friendly plates are ideal alternatives to traditional plastic plates.

  • Why are wheat grass plates eco-friendly?

These plastic products are completely natural, they can be decomposed and used as fertilizer. They can also be melted back into pulp to create different products again and again.

Wheat straw plastics require less energy to produce. Regular plastics production uses lots of energy and releases a lot of CO2 gases. Wheat straws require less energy because they are natural and do not need as much processing to become pulp. In addition, their natural fiber makes the material strong enough so no need for added toxins, such as oil, in the processing.

The wheatgrass used for wheat straw plastics is an agricultural waste, there is no need for extra plantation for this eco-friendly plastic production. It also provides additional income for agricultural farmers since they can sell their waste products which traditionally these are disposed of by burning creating air pollution.

  • How long will wheat straw dishes last?

Like traditional plastics, wheat straw plastics are extremely durable and lightweight. This makes wheat dishes perfect for everyday use. This also means that they will typically last 5 - 10 years and can be used daily.

  • What is BPA?

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is an industrial chemical used in plastics manufacturing and added to many commercial products, including food containers, baby bottles, plastic water bottles, and plastic tablewares. Some people are concerned about BPA’s ability to leach into foods and beverages, and some research suggests that BPA exposure may lead to a number of health problems.

  • What is melamine?

Melamine is combined with formaldehyde and heated to create melamine resin, which is molded into colorful plates and bowls. Melamine is also used in some bamboo plates as a binder (check with the brand). If acidic or hot food is placed on a melamine dish (or if the melamine plate is microwaved), melamine can leach from the dish into the food, and has been detected in urine of those eating off melamine plates. Melamine has been associated with kidney stones and renal failure in small animals and infants. While the small leach may not cause much illness, no studies have been made about the long term implications of being exposed to small amounts of melamine over a long period of time.
